How to Set an Intention

How to set an intention

Intentions are the seeds you sow to manifest your goals and dreams. An intention gives you clarity, focus and inspiration that you can tap into every single day. Whenever you feel uncertain, afraid, lost or confused, simply connect with your intention and channel that energy into the moment. But how do you set an intention?

If you aren’t sure about the difference between intentions and resolutions you might want to check out my post on the importance of valued intentions.

You can think of an intention like a road map. Without an intention it’s like getting on a bike with no direction. This can be great sometimes because you’re allowing fate to happen to you, but if you know that you want to get somewhere, the power of setting an intention is going to help you get there.

True, it means I am responsible for all my fails, for everything that doesn’t work, for every set back and criticism. But it also means that I am accountable for every success, every achievement. And how awesome is that. In coming to this realisation, I’ve experienced a lightness, compassion and focus.

1. Keep Your Intention Positive

Make sure your intention has a positive tone. Rather than phrasing your intention as something you don’t want, try flip it around. Your chosen intention should always be positive, uplifting, and always in the present tense. “I am” and not “I need” or “I want.” Focus on what you want, not what you don’t want. This sounds basic but in the beginning it can be a little challenging, especially if you are accustomed to spending lots of energy thinking about what you don’t want.

2. Release Your Intention and Desires

Once you have your intention in mind, it’s time to release your intentions and desires to the universe. The best time to sow the seeds of your intention is during the period after meditation, while your awareness remains centred in the quiet field of all possibilities. After you set an intention, let it go—simply stop thinking about it. Continue this process for a few minutes after your meditation period each day.

3. Let the Universe Handle the Details

Trust that there is a power greater than you to orchestrate the complete fulfilment of your intentions. Don’t listen to the voice that says that you have to be in charge, that obsessive vigilance is the only way to get anything done. If you force the outcome, it may not be as good for you as the one that comes naturally. You have released your intentions into the fertile ground of pure potentiality, and it will bloom when the season is right.

4. Check in With your Intention Everyday

Every morning before I wake up, I place my hand on my heart for just a few seconds or a few moments, and I breathe, connect to myself, send love to myself, and send love to the day. Then I set an intention for my day.

A few ways you can gently remind yourself of your intention:
  1. Set an alarm with your intention
  2. Write it in your planner (daily)
  3. Put it on your wall or mirror where you see it every day
  4. Make a background for your computer or put a sticky note on your screen
  5. Write a small paragraph about why you have this intention (on your Notes app or whatever you prefer on your phone) that you look at regularly

Good luck and let me know how you get on in the comments below! xx
